Foreign minister Moosa Zameer received a phone call from the Secretary of State of the United States Antony Blinken where they discussed strengthening the relationship between the two countries, the Maldivian foreign ministry said Thursday.
In a statement, the ministry said Zameer and Blinken reflected on the renewed vigour of the bilateral relations between the Maldives and the United States, and discussed on further strengthening the existing bilateral partnership.
The discussions centred on a wide range of issues, including defence cooperation, economic development, climate change and adaptation, democratic governance, and the rule of law, it added.
"Secretary Blinken, while reiterating the importance of the partnership, expressed the United States Government’s commitment to continue working with the Maldives on shared priorities," the statement read.
"Minister Zameer conveyed the readiness of President Dr [Mohamed] Muizzu’s government to work together in this endeavour. Minister Zameer also expressed his gratitude to the United States Government for its continued support to the Maldives and for the importance it attaches to enhancing the partnership further."
