Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) will pay MVR 100 million of the money owed to fishing boats on Wednesday.

MIFCO announced this in an X post on Wednesday evening. MIFCO said it would pay MVR 100 million of the outstanding amount to the fishing boats early on Wednesday, but did not give any further details.

In the post on X, MIFCO thanked the fishermen for their cooperation.

The Fisheries Ministry said that MVR 200 million has not been paid to fishermen when the new government took over. Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam said in December that MVR 136 million had been deposited with the fishermen.

He said the biggest concern of the fishermen is the lack of immediate payment for the fish. Therefore, President Mohammed Muizzu's intention is to arrange things in such a way that a permanent solution can be brought. The government has also aimed to pay the fishermen within two weeks of weighing in their catches.
