Ministers of the new government said on Thursday evening that the Islamic Ministry’s debt of MVR 27 million at the end of the previous government has been fully repaid and the debt of MVR 160 million in the Sports Ministry has been reduced to MVR 35 million.

The ministers were speaking at the first of a series of forums held at Sultan Park on Thursday evening to share information on the work being done by the ministries and answer the questions of the people.

Speaking at the start of the forum, Islamic Minister Dr Mohammad Shaheem Ali Saeed said:

  • When President Muizzu took over the government, the ministry's debt stood at MVR 27 million

  • Within the first two weeks of his administration, the President has arranged the necessary funds to pay off the debt

Once the ministry pays the money owed to the companies, the stalled projects in the islands will be resumed and services will be available soon, he said.

The former Youth Ministry was split in two and the newly created Sports Ministry in this government said the ministry’s debt had reached MVR 160 million at the turn of regimes. Thus:

  • The amount is from 232 projects awarded to the ministry; it is equivalent to the ministry's budget of about two years

  • The President has paid off MVR 125 million out of MVR 160 million in the last two months

The ministers said that the works that have been stopped are being resumed as the debts of the ministries are being paid. They highlighted the efforts being made to achieve the 'Week 14' or first 100 days goals and some of the activities planned for the future.
