Maldives is ready to cultivate and further strengthen all mutually beneficial partnerships, the country's foreign minister Moosa Zameer said on Thursday.

Speaking at a reception held at Hotel Jen in Male to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Australia, Zameer said President Mohamed Muizzu’s foreign policy is premised on securing unwavering global respect for the independence and national sovereignty of the Maldives, while enhancing relevance and cultivating economic and political resilience of the Maldives.

"We are hence ready to cultivate and further strengthen all such mutually beneficial partnerships," he said.

Australia’s longstanding support has indeed played a pivotal role in propelling the socio-economic progress of the Maldives, Zameer said. He highlighted that the country's commitment to human resource development through annual scholarships under the Australian Awards programme has been instrumental in empowering countless Maldivians.

"Last year, we achieved a momentous milestone with the establishment of the High Commission of Australia in the Maldives. This diplomatic representation serves as a testament to the deepening ties between our two countries and provides a platform for enhanced collaboration across various sectors," he said.

"As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the Maldives remains steadfast in our commitment to further strengthening the bonds of friendship with Australia. Our vision is one of continued close engagement, where we can build upon the foundations laid over the past 50 years and embark on a journey towards shared successes and collaborative achievements."

Zameer said he anticipate a future marked by innovation and cooperation in various fields. The strategic alignment of interests, particularly in areas such as climate change, maritime security, and sustainable development, positions the two countries as natural allies in the pursuit of common goals, he added.

"Together, we can create a future that not only benefits our respective nations but also contributes to the broader well-being of the region," he said.
