High Court on Tuesday sentenced a juvenile charged over the murder of Mohammad Anas inside the Litus Service Centre in Male, to 18 years and nine months in jail.
Anas was stabbed to death by four men on the night of July 31, 2017, when he entered the Litus Service Centre to escape from a group of people that were following him carrying weapons on motorcycles. They stabbed Anas in 24 places.
The suspect who was 17 years old at the time was charged with murder using a sharp object.
The Juvenile Court had earlier acquitted the boy over the murder case of Anas from Fenfiyazuge/R. Meedhoo.
Prosecutor's General (PG) appealed the judgement at the High Court, which on October 9 held him guilty of voluntary homicide. The decision on his sentencing was deferred as per the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.
During the sentencing hearing on Tuesaday, the High Court sentenced him to 18 years and nine months in jail.
Apart from the juvenile, the trial of the other men accused in the case is ongoing in the criminal court.
In addition to the juvenile, three other persons were charged with killing a man using a sharp object.
