Police launch probe into clash inside parliament chambers

Police assures that the necessary measures have been taken for the safety of members in parliament.

The police on Wednesday said they were investigating clashes between lawmakers in parliament during the session to approve ministers on March 28 heated up.

Acting Head of Crime Investigation Command Chief Superintendent Ahmed Nafiz told a reporters on Wednesday that the parliament has also reported the matter to the police.

In addition, some members who were injured in the clashes have also filed complaints with the police, he said.

"This includes cases where the injured MPs reported assault as well as threatening messages they received, which worries them, and cases where they sought protection," Nafiz said.

He says police are investigating all the cases. He added:

  • The relevant authorities have been informed of related issues

  • Necessary measures have been taken for the safety of members

Several MPs were injured in the clashes, including Kanditheemu Constituency MP Abdullah Shaheem Abdul Hakeem, who was admitted in hospital to treat a head injury. Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer was also injured.
