The State Electric Company (STELCO) has been awarded the contract to renovate, repair and restore several important monuments in the capital Male.
The contract was handed over to the company at a ceremony held at STELCO on Sunday under a memorandum of understanding signed to work with the Heritage Ministry for a period of five years. The memorandum was signed by:
-
STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahumy, on behalf of the company.
-
Heritage Minister Adam Naseer Ibrahim, on behalf of the ministry
Under the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), STELCO has been entrusted with the renovation and restoration works, as well as various electric works on the following monuments:
-
Male Friday Mosque, mosque courtyard and minaret (Hukuru Miskiy)
-
Male Medhu Ziyaarai
-
Kalhu Vakaru mosque and courtyard
Speaking at the signing ceremony, STELCO MD Hussain Fahumy said the work of preserving these monuments was delayed due to the weather but there will be no further delay.
"This is a very technical task and we have been looking into it very closely with the ministry. After a rainy season, some time should be given for the drying of the Friday mosque minaret as well as other technical matters. That is why it was actually delayed," he said.
STELCO has previously carried out works to preserve, renovate and decorate the porite wells and minaret of the Friday Mosque and Medhu Ziyaarai grounds.
