President Mohammed Muizzu on Monday urged people to vote keeping in mind that projects will be hampered if the ruling party does not get a majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The President said this while addressing a rally in Addu during his current tour of the southern atolls.
“The political system of Maldives, the constitutional system, is designed to prevent the government from doing what it wants to do if the parliament opposes the government," he said.
He asked the people to vote for the development of the islands, their cities and the country rather than for politics.
'Nationality may be lost too'
The outcome of the parliamentary elections could set back the government's efforts to promote Maldives's independence and nationalism, he said. He said the government is working to withdraw Indian troops from Maldives.
While progress is being made in the efforts, if the people decide in the parliamentary elections to 'undo' it, “are we not changing the direction of our country on our own?” he asked.
In addition, the President said that the government's efforts to resolve the issue of the lost sea territory of Maldives during the previous government will see fruition with the full cooperation of the Parliament.
The President said this is the time to put national interest above other interests. If we do not do so, we will lose our nationality, he said.
"You can see the irresponsible way things are being done in parliament. Because we have power and we have many members, we are doing things as we please”, the President asked.
"Is that what you want from your elected members? That's a heartfelt question. That's not what I believe any Maldivian citizen would want if he loved his country”.
