Summary

President described the parliament decision to reject three of his ministers as completely baseless.

The opposition controlled parliament's decision to refuse approval for three cabinet ministers was influenced by foreign influence, incumbent president Dr. Mohamed Muizzu alleged Sunday.

President Muizzu's appointed 22 members to his first ministerial cabinet and sent them to parliament for approval. However, the opposition controlled parliament had rejected the nominations of three ministers.

The three ministers who were not approved by the parliament are:

  • 1-Attorney General - Ahmed Usham

  • 2-Housing Minister - Dr Ali Haider

  • 3-Islamic Minister - Dr Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed

President Muizzu however, re-appointed the three later the same day in what has been described as blatant defiance of parliamentary powers. Approval for these ministers were sent back to parliament on the 6th of this month again.

During his ongoing visit to the northern Atolls, the president highlighted the difficulties his government was facing by the misuse of parliament majority by the opposition.

Speaking to residents of HDh. Atoll Nolhivaram, president described the parliament decision to reject three of his ministers as completely baseless.

President also said:

  • 1-

Parliament has always approved the cabinet if the constitutionally mandated criteria are met

  • 2-

Cabinet members must first be given the opportunity to prove their ability to discharge constitutionally mandated duties

  • 3-

No justifiable reason to refuse approval for some ministers

"We have also heard what really went down. They [opposition] kept saying they have no choice but to refuse approval for some ministers, which we now believe was influenced by a foreign power," he alleged.

"We [opposition] must reject two or three ministers. That's the exact language they [opposition] used."

President also reiterated his plea to the people urging them to deny parliament majority to the opposition in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
