Minister for Islamic Affairs Dr Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that in mosques near residential areas, Taraweeh prayers and evening prayers should not be heard outside the mosque.
Former MP Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) in a post on X, said that the sound of prayers outside the mosque in the area where he lives is loud, making it difficult for people to pray at home.
"People in this neighbourhood can pray Isha after Taraweeh prayers are over in the mosque," Ibrahim Ismail tagged Minister Shaheem in his post.
He noted that this is the norm during every Ramadan.
Replying to the post, Minister Shaheem said the best way is to limit loudspeaker inside the mosque during Taraweeh prayers and Tahajjud prayers.
"It is better to operate in such a way that the loud sound of such prayers do not hinder children’s sleep or those who have to pray at home”, the minister said.
In response to Shaheem's remarks, Ibrahim Ismail said that making noise as a public nuisance is against the law of common social standards.
"It is against religion to pray out loud with speakers aimed outside," he wrote, saying the Islamic Ministry should put a stop to it.
In response, the minister said he was working to improve things. The positive results will start to show, he said.
