Maldives population grows by over 50,000 in 8 years

The growth in the expatriate population outnumbered that of Maldivians over the past eight years.

Maldives population grew by over 50,000 in eight years, preliminary data from a recently-concluded nationwide census exercise showed on Thursday. 

Most of the data collection works under the census exercise which began on September 13 concluded on October 18. With this, preliminary figures from the census, which was carried out across the country after a gap of eight years were released Thursday evening.

According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the population now stands at 4,52,495. This is an increase of 50,425 people from the 2014 census.

  • The growth in the expatriate population outnumbered that of Maldivians over the past eight years

  • 16,897 locals added to the population, while foreigners increased by 33,527

  • The number of Maldivians currently living in the Maldives is 355,331; The total number of migrant workers is 97,164

According to NBS, the number of immigrants recorded in the census is 65% of the total migrant population shown by immigration records. Immigration records show there are 150,000 foreigners in the country.

MBS said it was working with employers to gap the discrepancies in the expatriate population. 

Even in counting the local population, there is a small gap with the registered population in the country.

  • There are a total of 3,97,372 people registered as locals with the Department of National Registration (DNR)

  • The census data showed 3,55,331 locals

  • According to NBS, among those registered are Maldivians living abroad.

In order to make the data collected during the census more complete, MBS plans to conduct a survey assessing post enumeration quality by November 10.

Those who have not yet been recorded in the census are asked to contact the bureau's hotline or inform them about the inclusion online.
