Former State Minister for Housing Akram Kamaluddin has accused President Mohammed Muizzu of keeping the people “in a quandary” without handing over the land plots to the beneficiaries of the Binnveriya scheme launched and completed by the former government and keeping the land for the president’s own wish list.

The Housing Ministry is giving another opportunity to those who have not yet accepted land registrations for the land plots given under the Binnveriya scheme. Thus:

  • The Housing Ministry announced on Thursday that an additional opportunity will be opened from Saturday until 12 pm on March 27

  • Those who wish to accept land registrations must make an appointment through the Hiyaavehi Portal

Akram reposted this announcement of the Ministry of Housing on X and slammed the practices of this government in allotment of plots under the Binnveriya scheme and laid heavy allegations against the government and President Muizzu. According to him:

  • With the change of government, the land assignment program was discontinued; landowners went to the Housing Ministry and tried to find out what was going on, and were told different things on each such occasion

  • While the landowners were kept "in the dark," the President was running a "web-spinning-agenda" contrary to what he said

"Now he is saying that the registry can be handed over by making an appointment through the portal. It is very difficult for landowners to access the portal. It is not easy," Akram said, referring to the latest announcement of the Housing Ministry.

He said the deadline for making an appointment is too short and he questioned what will happen to those who could not get an appointment.

Akram alleged that "the ministry is not clearly telling us what should happen because they plan to cut off the land of those who do not show and distribute these lands to those who President Muizzu wants”.

It cannot be done that way and the people will raise their voices against it, Akram said.

Some have accused the previous government of corruption in determining who will be allocated land and flats under the housing schemes.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has conducted an investigation into the schemes and informed the authorities of its findings. The ACC had said:

  • There are also problems in the allocation of land under the Binnveriya scheme

  • The commission is also conducting an investigation

An advisory committee has now been constituted on the advice of the President to take decisions on submissions regarding the Binnveriya Scheme and the Gedhoruveriya Scheme and the future work to be done in relation to the two schemes.
