President Mohammed Muizzu said on Saturday that he has left instruction with the Prosecutor General to appeal cases of those accused of child sexual abuse had they been pardoned or granted any amnesty.
There has been talk of how two people accused of such cases were recently released from jail through influence by the government, coinciding with the parliamentary campaign.
President Muizzu responded to the allegations in a post on X.
In the post, Muizzu said:

Amnesty for those arrested or convicted of child sexual abuse is unacceptable

It is also unacceptable to give such people concessions

Let us all work together to make this society free from the evil claws of such evil people
“The government is asking the Prosecutor General to appeal against such decisions without delay,” the President's post said.

High Court judge and current JSC Vice-President Mohammed Niyaz has also recently expressed dissatisfaction with the President's power to pardon people sentenced to life imprisonment for serious crimes.
