The Football Association of Maldives (FAM), which is embroiled in a financial crisis, has been ordered by the Civil Court to settle a huge debt of USD 100,000.
Beehive Hotels filed a lawsuit against the FAM in July last year seeking USD 102,186 (MVR 1.6 million) from the agency. Thus:
-
FAM has not paid the company for services in accordance with an agreement made
-
Therefore, the company has requested for compensation from the FAM at once including the 2% as penalty for each day that passes without payment
Civil Court Judge Faisal Adam on Thursday ruled that FAM does owe the company USD 102,186.
The court ordered the money to be paid in instalments within one year from Thursday. However, the judgement did not provide for the damages requested by the company.
The FAM defended itself in the case, saying it also believed the USD 102,186 owed to Beehive was due. However, the FAM refused to pay compensation. The reason given is:
-
The compensation filed by Beehive is a relatively large amount to be paid by the day
-
Beehive does not describe a loss amounting to 2% per day
-
In addition, one of the losses is not previously agreed to by the FAM
The Civil Court had also ordered the FAM to pay MVR 500,000 to Beehive last November.
