Feel-like temperature in Maldives capital reaches 46 degrees
Conditions are likely to shift to ENSO-neutral by April-June, and the odds of La Nina developing in June-August 2024 have risen to 55%.
Everyone is complaining about the heat lately. The complaints come from real rising temperatures, and was evident in the capital city area’s temperatures on Wednesday.
According to the Met Office, the feel-like temperature in the Male area reached 46.3 degrees Celsius at 11 am on Wednesday, which is a record in recent history.
The temperature tweaked a little, down to 46 degrees Celsius after noon, but this is still a record.
Even last year, the Met Office had asked people to be careful when going outside as temperatures could reach above 40 degrees Celsius in April, as is seasonal in the Maldives. However this year is worse, caused by the El Nino.
El Nino, the warm phase of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate pattern, has continued into 2024 since 2023, but the atmospheric part of the pattern is weakening now. Conditions are likely to shift to ENSO-neutral by April-June, and the odds of La Nina developing in June-August 2024 have risen to 55%.
Earlier last month, the temperature in central Maldives reached 42 degrees Celsius.
The last El Nino event was the winter of 2018-2019, and El Nino events typically occur every 2-7 years.
