Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent his best wishes to all the people of Maldives on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The Indian High Commission in the Maldives said Modi has sent a message to President Dr Mohammed Muizzu and all Maldivians on the occasion of Eid.

The commission, referring to Modi, said:

  • He highlighted the cultural and civilizational ties shared by India and Maldives

  • Eid also reminds us of the need for friendship and unity to build a peaceful and inclusive world

Relations between India and Maldives have had setbacks earlier this year amid changes in Maldivian foreign policy following the change of government. Meanwhile, President Muizzu returned to Maldives after completing his official visit to China and had thrown some sharp jabs at India himself.

Relations between the two countries also seem to be affected by some social media posts made by top government officials against India.
