Maldives education minister Dr Aishath Ali has been elected as the alternate board member to represent the Asia and Pacific Constituency in the Global Partnership in Education (GPE).

GPE is the largest global funding partner dedicated solely for transforming education in the lower-income countries and runs through a unique, multi-stakeholder partnership.

In a statement, the education ministry said Sunday that the minister was selected through a process where her name was nominated to the constituency and after consideration by the GPE secretariat, the nomination was sent for endorsement from the member countries of the constituency.

She was endorsed with positive affirmation by all the members of the constituency, the ministry added.

The GPE board sets the partnership’s policies and strategies. The board mirrors the wide-ranging and diverse nature of the partnership and includes members from lower-income country governments and all development partners: donors, civil society organisations, private sector and foundations, and multilateral agencies and regional banks.

The responsibilities of the board include reviewing performance of key strategic initiatives that are core to GPE’s goals, considering the key risks that can derail those goals, and adapting and adjusting its business model and platforms as warranted.

The board also serves as a global leader, advocate and convener for education.
