MDP loses Hinnavaru seat after 30 years

The provisional results show that most of the current members of parliament have lost the election.

Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has lost the Lhaviyani atoll Hinnavaru constituency parliament seat dominated by former President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih or other MDP members for the past 30 years.

The provisional results of the parliamentary elections held on Sunday show that the ruling PNC’s candidate Mohammed Abdul Rahman won the Hinnavaru constituency.

Mohammed Abdul Rahman was contested closely by the current Hinnavaru MP Jeehan Mahmood.

Before Jeehan won the 2019 elections, former president Solih had represented Hinnavaru constituency in parliament for 25 years.

The results so far show:

  • PNC candidate Mohammed Abdul Rahman got 755 votes

  • MDP candidate Jeehan Mahmood got 546 votes

  • Abdul Salam Moosa, who contested as an independent, received 382 votes

The provisional results show that most of the current members of parliament have lost the election. They include the current Speaker of Parliament Mohammed Aslam, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem and former Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah.

The Democrats Ali Azim, Ibrahim Rasheed, Imthiyaz Fahumy and Hassan Latheef also lost their seats in this election.

Ruling PPM/PNC coalition are on course to secure an overwhelming majority in the next parliament. According to preliminary results the ruling coalition has secured 66 out of 93 constitutions thus far.
