Another independent MP-elect who won seat in parliamentary elections March has joined the ruling party, People’s National Congress (PNC) to further solidify its parliament supermajority.

Kurendhoo MP elect Shamin Habeeb signed for PNC during a small ceremony held at the presidential residence Muliaage on Sunday evening.

Shamin becomes the eighth independent MP-elect to join the ruling party since the elections in March.

Muizzu's party now commands 74 members in the 20th parliament scheduled to be sworn on May 28.

With JP, MDA and MNP seats all part of the ruling coalition, the number of pro-government members will rise to 78.

The total number of member seats in the Majlis is 93.
