Customs seizes smuggled cigarettes worth MVR 3 million

Customs said it is now investigating the smuggling of the goods.

Customs have seized cigarettes worth MVR 3 million smuggled into Maldives under the name of tissues.

After the news of the stolen cigarettes surfaced on social media, customs issued a press release on Saturday, saying that the goods were imported into the Maldives on May 19. The material was declared in customs, which, according to them, was 343 carton tissue paper.

However, based on intelligence information received about the goods, the relevant sections of customs conducted an operation on Thursday.

According to Customs:

  • Inside the cargo container, 143 cartons of tissues and 200 master cartons of cigarettes were found

  • The value of the cigarettes found amount to more than MVR 3.1 million

  • The goods have now been seized

Customs said it is now investigating the smuggling of the goods. The agency said it will not hesitate to enforce the customs law regarding such imports.
