Foreign minister Moosa Zameer had a meeting with the Secretary of State of the United States of America Antony Blinken on Wednesday.

Foreign ministry in a statement said discussions between Minister Zameer and Secretary Blinken centred on the deepening relations of Maldives and United States, including in the area of defence and security cooperation, promoting and strengthening democracy, commitment to economic growth and adapting to climate change.

"Maldives and the United States reaffirmed commitment to explore new avenues to strengthen the partnership and acknowledged the importance of upholding a rules-based international order and expressed their commitment to regional stability, maritime security and promoting peace," the statement said.

According to the statement, Secretary Blinken congratulated the Maldives on the successful Presidential and Parliamentary elections and acknowledged the Maldives’ leadership in the international fora towards combatting climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. 

During the meeting, Minister Zameer acknowledged the importance of the educational opportunities offered by the United States and noted that easier visa facilitation services for Maldivians would promote people-to-people contact paving the way to promote cultural exchange, tourism, and business ties between the two countries, the statement added.

Zameer is currently on a trip to the United States until Thursday.

  • He will meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guiterres and other senior UN officials

  • He will attend a meeting of the Council of Foreign Relations

  • He will also meet with Maldivians living in Washington and New York

  • He will meet with senior tour operators and travel advisors in New York to discuss the expansion of Maldivian tourism
