Environment State Minister Fathmath Shamnaz Ali Saleem has been arrested.
Police told Atoll Times that Shamnaz was arrested on Sunday.
A case involving two others arrested with her is under investigation, police said, but would not provide any further details on the case, or the nature of it.
Some newspapers reported that Shamnaz was arrested on charges of witchcraft. However, details are yet to be released.
Before being appointed as the State Minister for Environment, Shamnaz was a counsellor for Henveiru South constituency of the Male City Council. She resigned from the council to join the government of President Mohammed Muizzu.
Shamnaz is the former wife of Presidential Office Minister Adam Rameez, who is very close to the President and First Lady. Rameez was also a former member of the Male City Council.
