The Criminal Court has determined the remand period for 13 officers of the Maldives Correctional Service arrested for smuggling drugs and mobile phones into prison.
On Thursday evening, police launched an investigation into a case of large sums of money entering the personal accounts of corrections officers. Police allege the money was obtained by smuggling contraband into prison.
About MVR 73 million in total was deposited in the accounts of these 13 corrections officers since last year.

Eleven of the arrested were ordered to remain in custody pending trial

The other two were remanded in custody for five days
While 13 officers are being prosecuted in connection with the operation, police said on Thursday that a total of 18 corrections officers were accused in the case. They are all junior-level officers, police said.
