Although Maldives may not be bankrupt despite economic challenges, people should take measures to cut costs and reduce eating out and cook at home, President's Office Minister Ali Arif said Sunday.

Speaking at a rally held at the PNC camp Sunday evening, Ali Arif said people should take measures to reduce expenditure.

He praised the measures taken by President Mohamed Muizzu to reduce expenditure due to the economic situation.

“If a person is sick and the cure is by taking bitter medicine, he has to take that bitter medicine. It is compulsory,” he said.

However, the future looks bright, Ali Arif noted. He said the public should also go down to a rather normal life of eating tuna broth to cooperate with the president’s spending cuts.

“These days we have to stop always making takeaways and eating at home and cook our own fish broth and rice, and go back to a normal life,” Ali Arif said.

The government has not cut any services or benefits to the people and has decided to reduce the expenditure only on ceremonies and meetings, he said.

“It is being done in a very small way,” Arif said, adding that the cost-cutting measures would not have much impact on the people.

President Muizzu has decided not to hold the upcoming Independence Day and other such ceremonies.
