In order to provide relief to the fishermen, Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has shifted four boats operating from Gaafu Alifu Kooddoo to Lhaviyani Felivaru and changed its operations.
MIFCO said on Tuesday that it has now decided to operate four RSW 27.5 boats from Felivaru. It was earlier used in Kooddoo, Randhi 23, 24, 25 and 26.
In addition, MIFCO said:
-
The Jazeera-102, which was previously operated by the company, will be used at the Kooddoo site
-
The boat will be able to handle more than 100 tonnes of fish per day
“Felivaru is a canning factory and it is our biggest goal to get fresh fish kept in RSW there,” said Ahmed Zahir, MIFCO's general manager.
“These four vessels, when moved up north, will be available at various harbours to buy fish”.
Zahir said this would increase the confidence of tuna fishermen in the north.
According to him:
-
During the good fishing season in the south, a small boat of the Randhi series did not fill to capacity. However, the relocation of Jazeera-102 to the south will increase the amount of fish iced in the area
-
As a result, the queue for selling fish during the fishing season will be reduced
Zahir said Jazeera-106 and Jazeera-105, the latest to join the MIFCO fleet, are also involved in fish procurement. Jazeera-104 will also be operational soon, he said.
