Cats in the city are being registered and medicated.
There is a disease spreading among cats these days. It is a disease that affects only cats and has limited chances of survival. So, the cats are being treated and registered to save them from the disease, according to the Feline Welfare Organization, which runs the program.
The program was launched on Tuesday by Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Aishath Rameela. The minister gave medicine to a cat and registered it as 'Goldy'.
According to Feline Welfare spokesperson Ahmed Vizan, the medicine donated by an organization called Care for Paws was given to cats that gather in the parking lot in front of Marry Brown. It is a gathering place for many cats in that part of the capital city. According to him:
-
All the cats were registered after being given medication
-
To register, the cats are given a tag collar with a serial number
-
The association will keep all the information about the cat
-
80 cats were registered on Tuesday
"The cats are being registered to document the disease and treatment given. Once the serial number is checked, all the information will be known," Vizan said.
He advised people visiting the area not to feed cats or administer any medicine during these days. He also asked people to wash their hands thoroughly if they touched a cat.
"For example, if you touch an infected cat and then touch a cat in the house, it gets infected. This is a dangerous disease even if it only spreads among cats," Vizan said.
In order to address the problem of cats in the city, the government is now building a special facility for cats in Hulhumale. There are over 3,000 cats in the city and they will be taken to the facility.
