The government has given an extension to those who have not paid fees for the expatriates working for them.

The list of employers who have not paid the fees pertaining to foreign workers in excess of MVR 100,000 was published on 24th last month. The amount owed to the government is over MVR 1.7 billion.

The Homeland Ministry did so by giving employers two weeks to pay the outstanding dues for permits issued in respect of foreigners, saying it would publicise the names of the defaulters.

After the list was released, the ministry first asked the applicants to deposit the money before the 12th of this month. Then on Saturday the deadline was extended. Thus:

  • Employers have now been asked to pay up by 31st of this month

  • If the payment is not made within that period, the company will be suspended from the 'expat system' from September 1

  • The government also issued warnings that defaulters will be suspended from services through the system

As of 14th of this month, MVR 183 million has been received out of the MVR 1.7 billion outstanding.

The Labor Relations Authority has recently been transferred to the Ministry of Homeland Security to resolve the issue of foreigners. The decision was taken to strengthen measures to address the issue of illegal immigrants.
