The trial of seven people charged with the attempted murder of former Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem started in the Criminal Court on Sunday.

Shameem was attacked on the morning of January 31 in front of his residence.

Seven people have been arrested and remanded in custody pending trial.

The prosecution alleges that it was a planned attack to kill him. The seven were also charged with attempted murder with a dangerous weapon.

The seven people accused, except Maisaan Hashim, were present during the hearing at Criminal Court on Sunday.

None of the six men present in court have a lawyer. All six said they needed access to a lawyer.

Case judge Ibrahim Ihusan said that they will be given 10 days according to the law. The deadline expires on September 23.

The judge also said that he had asked the correctional department to make the necessary phone calls to arrange lawyers.

Maisaan was not present at the hearing due to a communication confusion when he was transferred from police custody to corrections custody.

The judge said a separate hearing would be held on another date for Maisaan.

The people charged and the reasons are:

  • Midhhath Adam, 24, Riveli/R. Alifushi: According to the charges, Midhhath was the man who planned the attack with others and went to the area while Shameem was near the Noor Mosque. On January 31, at 7:42 am, Midhhath tried to attack Shameem on the head while he was on the road near the Noor Mosque.

  • Mohamed Jazlan, 22, Thundi Javaahiru villa/L. Gan: According to the charges, Jazlan was the one who planned to attack Shameem and took Midhhath to the Noor Mosque. After taking Midhhath on a cycle near the Noor Mosque, they attacked Shameem and left the area together.

  • 3. Ahmed Maisaan Hashim, 20, of Male/Dhaftharu no. 2247: According to the charges, Maisaan was the one who provided the cycle to Midhhath so that he could go and attack Shameem near the Noor Mosque.

The other defendants in the case are:

  • Shamaal Hussain, 21, Musthareege/Th. Gaadhiffushi

  • Zayan Naseer, 23, Kemeehiya/Adh. Maamigili

  • Abaan Abdul Hannaan, 23, Ruvaa/Th. Dhiyamigili

  • Rajuwaan Latheef, 22, Muringu/L. Maamendhoo

According to the charges, the four men were waiting in a car near the Noor Mosque until Shameem was attacked. After the attack, they all left the area together.

Shameem was attacked while serving as Prosecutor General and this attack is believed to have attempted to strike Shameem on the head to kill him. However, Shameem was able to defend himself, resulting in a fractured forearm instead.
