5 political parties eligible for state funding in 2025
For 2024, the state budget allocated MVR 44 million for six political parties, including the PPM.
Elections Commission (EC) announced on Wednesday that five political parties in the Maldives are eligible to receive funding from the 2025 state budget.
This follows the criteria outlined in the Political Parties Act, which provides:
-
Parties with 10,000 or more members are entitled to state funding.
-
0.1% of the state budget is allocated for this purpose.
At a meeting held on Wednesday, the EC determined the parties that meet the membership threshold as of the date of the parliamentary budget approval.
Commission member and spokesperson Hassan Zakariyya stated that five parties qualified for funding this year. They are:
-
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)
-
Progressive National Congress (PNC)
-
Adhaalath Party
-
Jumhooree Party (JP)
-
Maldives Development Alliance (MDA)
Zakariyya noted that the funds allocated to each party would be proportional to their membership as recorded on December 31.
He also mentioned that while the recently dissolved Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had met the 10,000-member requirement, it would not be eligible for funding due to its dissolution. Administrative procedures for its dissolution are currently underway.
Zakariyya further commented on the current membership standings:
-
The MDP remains the largest party registered with the EC.
-
However, the PNC is expected to surpass the MDP in membership by the end of this month.
For 2024, the state budget allocated MVR 44 million for six political parties, including the PPM. Funds for the five eligible parties will be distributed according to the revised member proportions.
