PNC to host internal elections in Oct; no voting for PPM members

Falaah said the party has now reached 50,000 members.

Ruling PNC has scheduled internal elections for October 19.

The PNC's election committee, including PNC chief parliamentarian, Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falaahl, held a press conference at the party's office in the Sea Tracs building on Wednesday.

“A total of 2,095 members will be elected to various positions,” he said.

The positions opened for application are:

  • Presidents and vice presidents

  • Presidents of the youth movement

  • Presidents of the women's movement

  • Steering committee members

Health minister Dr Abdulla Haleel said PNC parliamentarians will lead their constituencies. The constituency presidential election will be held in constituencies where there is no PNC member, he added.

Out of 93 constituencies, presidents will be elected in 18 constituencies.

Election timeline:

  • 11th September: Open for applications

  • 30th September: Close of nominations

  • 04th October: The list of voters made public and open for complaints

  • 08th October: Final list of voters released

  • 19th October: Voting

  • 24th October: Official results announced

Those who are party members until September 30 will be able to vote and contest the election.

The last parliamentary elections were held together with PNC and its affiliate PPM. PPM members were also given the opportunity to vote in the primary.

When asked by a journalist whether PPM members could vote in this election, Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubaarak, who was present at the press conference, said this was an internal election of the PNC and only PNC members could vote.

Earlier, President Mohamed Muizzu announced that his goal was for PNC to reach 75,000 members when his government turns one on November 17. Falah told reporters on Wednesday that the party currently has 50,000 members.

"It will be the largest party in the country by November this year. We are working to have 75,000 members by November," he said.
