Parliament committee approves Abbas as chief prosecutor
The parliament will hold an extraordinary sitting on Tuesday to decide on Abbas's appointment as the PG.

Judiciary committee of the parliament on Monday approved the appointment of Abbas Shareef, currently serving as Legal Secretary at the President's Office, to the vacant position of Prosecutor General (PG).
President Mohamed Muizzu sent only Abbas’s name to the parliament. The parliament opened the opportunity to file complaints against Abbas until Monday afternoon.
Abbas was summoned by the committee for his interview Monday afternoon.
After the interview, the committee unanimously approved the appointment of Abbas.

The appointment of a PG is being done outside the parliament's term. That is because the law requires a new prosecutor to be appointed within 30 days of the vacancy.
The parliament will hold an extraordinary sitting on Tuesday to decide on Abbas's appointment as the PG.
The post of PG became vacant after Hussain Shameem resigned last month and parliament decided to remove him. Shameem resigned after the judiciary committee decided to remove him from office.
