Nasheed leaves for COP27 to represent Sri Lanka

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed left for Egypt on Friday to attend the United Nations Climate Conference or COP27 as a representative of neighbouring Sri Lanka.

Nasheed is part of the Sri Lankan delegation attending the conference in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh. He is the international climate adviser to Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
In a statement, parliament said Nasheed will attend a special meeting on Tuesday to discuss future plans for countries most vulnerable to climate crisis. It will be organised by the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and the Vulnerable Group of 20 (V20).
Nasheed will also meet senior officials of CVF, V20 and other countries on the sidelines of COP27.
Nasheed also attended a meeting of the CVF and the Sri Lanka Mission when he was recently in Sri Lanka to discuss foreign assistance to tide over the economic crisis in the island nation.
A high-level delegation also travels with Vice President Faisal, who represents the Maldives at COP27. The national address will be delivered by the Vice President. He will also take part in the high-level round-table discussions.
