In a bid to strengthen measures against drug smuggling into the Maldives, the police dog squad has been deployed at Velana International Airport (VIA).

The Maldives Police Service has confirmed that the deployment is part of a broader collaboration with customs officials aimed at curbing the illegal entry of narcotics into the country.

Although specific details of the operation have not been disclosed, the police have released photos showing dogs checking luggage and parcels at the airport.

The customs authorities have also been conducting special operations at various entry points to intercept narcotics. Over recent months, these operations have yielded significant seizures, helping to dismantle various smuggling attempts.

The police dog squad, initially introduced in 2015, is a resource in various law enforcement operations. The dogs have been used not only in anti-drug operations but also in other high-stakes missions, including intelligence-led investigations and anti-terrorism activities.

In response to growing security needs, the Maldives Police Service announced plans to expand the squad further. In 2022, an additional 10 dogs were brought in specifically for use in counter-terrorism operations. Currently, the dog squad consists of 25 dogs, each trained for specialised roles ranging from detecting explosives and narcotics to safeguarding high-profile individuals and international dignitaries.

The dogs are deployed in various environments where security threats may arise. These include collaboration with customs, surveillance of the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), and securing both the airport and its cargo areas. In addition, the dogs are often used to provide heightened security during events involving high-profile individuals.
