Government hospitals operated under the Malé Group of Hospitals, including Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), will begin providing prescription spectacles.
President Mohamed Muizzu made the announcement in an interview with Public Service Media (PSM) while discussing the government’s decision to increase the Aasandha coverage for spectacles from MVR 1,000 to MVR 2,000.
According to the President, the decision to introduce the service in government hospitals is intended to ensure that the increased Aasandha coverage is utilised in a controlled and effective manner, rather than creating opportunities for excessive pricing in the private sector.
In addition to IGMH, prescription spectacle services will also be available at Villimalé Hospital and Hulhumalé Hospital, both of which operate under the Malé Group of Hospitals.
"I don't mind how unhappy the private sector eyewear dealers are. Then the private sector should also compete with IGMH. The private sector should also make the same quality eyewear and glasses," the President said.
The government plans to implement the expanded service in line with its broader policy to improve accessibility to essential medical services under the national health insurance scheme.
