The connected islands of Addu have recently experienced power outages, leaving residents without electricity for several days.
Fenaka officials confirmed on Wednesday that the issue has been resolved for the time being, attributing the outages to a malfunctioning high-voltage cable at Gan Airport.
Fenaka Managing Director Muaaz Mohamed Rasheed emphasised that a permanent fix involves upgrading the aging high-voltage system, originally built 25 years ago, which is under increased pressure. To address this, a project awarded to China's Dongfang Electric International Corporation last April aims to completely overhaul the electricity network in Addu.
This project includes installing a new 32 MW power plant in Hithadhoo and enhancing the distribution system to boost electricity generation capacity for the next two decades.
The total cost of the project is $59 million, with Fenaka given 12 years to repay.
Completion is expected in 1.5 to 2 years, promising a long-term solution to Addu's electricity challenges.
