Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamman Waheed on Sunday called on Maldivians to refrain from aiding illegal immigrants.
His comments came ahead of a major inspection conducted by the Immigration Department, aimed at identifying and addressing the presence of illegal foreigners in the country.
Shamman emphasised the importance of community responsibility, urging Maldivians not to harbour individuals who lack legal status.
“I just ask the public not to put illegal foreigners under your responsibility right now. We are already taking measures, and there could be fines involved,” he explained.
He further encouraged citizens to report any illegal immigrants rather than risk facing penalties themselves.
The inspection, part of a broader initiative to tackle illegal immigration, involved collaboration with various agencies, including the police, the Health Protection Agency (HPA), and the Food and Drug Authority. Shamman acknowledged the support of these organisations, which played a crucial role in the inspection process.
During the event, Shamman highlighted several critical issues faced by the immigration department:
-
A significant number of foreigners are failing to pay the necessary fees for their residence and work permits.
-
There is a concerning trend of foreigners working outside their permitted job sectors.
-
The Maldivian government aims to resolve these issues within the next three years, reflecting a commitment to regularising the immigration process and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Sunday’s inspection spanned 27 locations across Phase One and Phase Two of Hulhumale’, including various shops, restaurants, and garages.
