Immigration detains 28, notices 165 expat workers in Hulhumale
The government has set an ambitious target to resolve the overarching issues of illegal immigration within three years.
Immigration department on Monday carried out a major inspection in Hulhumalé, resulting in the arrest of 28 foreigners and the issuance of notices to 165 others to appear before immigration authorities.
This operation targeted areas known for high concentrations of foreign workers and aimed to address ongoing issues related to illegal immigration.
According to a statement from the Immigration, the inspection involved thorough checks of 314 locations in Hulhumalé’s Phase 1 and 2, where a total of 769 foreigners were questioned. The inspected sites included various businesses such as shops, restaurants, and garages.
Among those arrested were individuals previously reported as fugitives. The notices issued pertained primarily to foreigners found with incomplete visa documentation.
Additionally, 92 Maldivians were identified as employing foreigners illegally, and they were advised in writing regarding their infractions.
The operation also saw collaboration with the police, Health Protection Agency (HPA), and the Food and Drug Authority.
Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamman Waheed highlighted the issue of local cooperation with illegal foreign workers, urging Maldivians to refrain from such practices.
He identified two primary concerns: an increasing number of foreigners failing to pay their required fees and the prevalence of foreigners working outside their permitted sectors.
The government has set a target to resolve the issues of illegal immigration within three years. In the past 10 months, over 4,000 illegal immigrants have been deported, with the highest monthly deportation numbers recorded in June, totalling 690 individuals.
From November to mid-September, the Immigration reported a total of 4,054 deportations, indicating a sustained effort to address illegal immigration.
