ACC discusses prosecution over graft flat scandal
ACC had previously reviewed the list of flat recipients under the schemes and submitted it to the housing ministry for revision.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated discussions with the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) to determine whether to prosecute individuals implicated in the corruption case linked to the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme, involving flats allocated during the previous government.
The ACC announced on the 19th of this month that it had launched an urgent investigation into the Binveriya and Gedhoruveriya schemes.
The investigation followed the public revelation of invalid documents submitted to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) by two individuals who did not qualify for land under the schemes.
Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef has instructed both the police and the ACC to:
-
Accept applications, determine recipients, and investigate the allocation of land and flats under the schemes.
-
Investigate and submit cases for prosecution if criminal charges are applicable.
-
Provide weekly updates on the investigation's progress and ensure an expedited process.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the ACC stated that discussions regarding prosecution in this public interest case are underway and necessary steps will be taken to prosecute individuals deemed liable.
The ACC had previously reviewed the list of flat recipients under the schemes and submitted it to the housing ministry for revision. According to the ACC, 60% of those on the flat allocation list prepared by the former government did not meet eligibility criteria.
