Immigration Department on Monday arrested a foreign national for violating public hygiene standards while producing local snacks for commercial purposes.

The individual was arrested from a residence in Henveiru following a report received by the Immigration authorities. Photos released by the department show the preparation of areca nuts, a snack widely consumed in Maldives.

Immigration officials reported that areca nuts, various types of packets, and printed labels intended for commercial packaging were found at the location.

“This facility was being used to produce Maldivian food products for commercial sale in violation of public hygiene standards. Multiple food items commonly found in shops were discovered here,” the Immigration Department stated in a post on X.

The foreign national has been taken into custody for further investigation.

In a related incident last August, the Immigration Department raided a food packaging facility that also failed to comply with general hygiene regulations.

The Immigration Department continues to monitor and take action against facilities operating in violation of hygiene and safety standards.
