Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) has been awarded the contract to redevelop the former runway of Velana International Airport (VIA) into a modernised taxiway, reinforcing the airport’s capacity to handle growing air traffic. The agreement was formalised at a ceremony held at VIA Tuesday, with officials confirming that the project will commence next month.
The redevelopment plan involves the complete reconstruction of the 3,200-metre former runway into a parallel taxiway, designated as 'Taxiway Charlie'.

Originally built in 1976, the runway was operational for decades before being retired in favour of a new runway, also constructed by BUCG.

With the introduction of the new runway, the former runway was converted into a taxiway in 2022 to support the airport’s growing traffic flow.

Now, under BUCG’s redevelopment project, the taxiway will undergo extensive upgrades to meet modern aviation standards and ensure smoother operations for aircraft on the ground.

Once complete, the renovated Taxiway Charlie will enhance VIA’s operational efficiency by reducing congestion and improving aircraft turnaround times.
