Record MVR 100 million collected as wealth alms

Islamic Ministry on Sunday announced that more than MVR 100 million was collected as Zakat al-Maal, or wealth alms, last year.
In a statement, the ministry confirmed that MVR 101.9 million was collected, based on figures compiled by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
The ministry attributed the increase in collections to efforts conducted by Zakat House last year to raise awareness about Zakat-related issues. It also noted that this marks the highest amount of Zakat al-Maal collected in a single year in the Maldives' history.
The funds collected will be distributed to eligible recipients in accordance with established judicial rules and standards.
The statement added, "We extend our gratitude to the wealthy individuals in the Maldives for their commitment to fulfilling their Zakat obligations."
The Zakat House has set the current property Zakat rate at MVR 9.3. Collections are managed by MIRA.
