President Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday dismissed tourism minister Ibrahim Faisal, with the portfolio now temporarily assigned to economic minister Mohamed Saeed.

The President’s Office did not provide an explanation for Faisal’s removal.

Faisal, who was appointed as Tourism Minister on November 17, 2023, shortly after President Muizzu assumed office, was instructed to cease official trips before his dismissal.

Faisal is the son of Abdul Raheem Abdulla, parliament speaker and chairman of the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC).

Since his appointment, Faisal faced criticism for a speech he delivered at a public event and questions were raised regarding his experience in managing tourism, the primary industry of the Maldivian economy.

No further details have been disclosed by the President’s Office regarding the decision to remove Faisal from the position.
