Agriculture Minister Dr Mariam Mariya said on Wednesday that AgroNat Company, established by the previous government to develop the agriculture sector, will resume operations with a new plan.
The Cabinet has decided to restart AgroNat, reversing its previous decision to dissolve the company, with the Ministry of Agriculture responsible for setting policies and overseeing its work. Meetings led by the minister have been held regarding the company's resumption.
Mariya stated that AgroNat would continue to operate as a separate entity, with its primary focus on ensuring food security. The company will retain its existing employees and maintain its previous management structure with no major changes.
Planned initiatives:
-
The initial phase will focus on small-scale projects to assist farmers in generating income.
-
Agri boats, which were previously inactive, will be used to purchase farmers' produce and distribute it across the country.
-
Training programmes will be introduced to help farmers manage plant diseases and improve agricultural practices.
Mariya highlighted the challenges faced by farmers, particularly young women, in accessing markets for their produce. She stated that the introduction of agri boats would help address this issue.
The minister also noted that AgroNat would train individuals in farming communities to support local farmers in addressing agricultural challenges.
Since its establishment, AgroNat has faced allegations of financial mismanagement, with several projects failing after significant expenditures.
