A Japanese company has commenced sea salt production in HA. Dhidhoo, marking the launch of the first salt factory of its kind in the Maldives.
According to HA. Dhidhoo Council President Abdulla Rasheed, the land for the facility has been leased to the council, and salt production began last Tuesday. The factory is operated by the Japanese firm and has engaged local residents in its development.
“The construction work was carried out by people from the island, and two residents are currently employed at the facility,” Rasheed said.
The facility produces sun-dried sea salt. According to the council, samples of the salt were sent to Japan for testing, where the product met quality requirements and secured a market. The salt will also be distributed locally, including to resorts in the Maldives.
Rasheed stated that the project is expected to generate employment and economic activity in HA. Dhidhoo, and may contribute revenue to the state if the venture proves sustainable.
The company intends to continue exporting to Japan, with plans to expand distribution depending on production capacity and demand.
