Former Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer has said the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) is a result of efforts by the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) office on Monday, Ameer claimed that former President Abdulla Yameen and current President Dr Mohamed Muizzu are attempting to take credit for the project, despite its development being led by the previous government.

According to Ameer, while the original agreement for the terminal project was signed during the Yameen administration, progress had stalled by the time Solih assumed office. Ameer noted that when the Solih administration took over, it encountered multiple challenges involving the project contractor, the government, and funding agencies.

He stated that the Solih administration resumed work on the terminal by negotiating with the donors and contractor, and by signing an addendum to the original agreement. He also said that the design of the terminal was significantly revised under Solih’s leadership, with changes made to both the exterior and interior of the building.

Ameer further stated that despite delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, funding for the majority of the now MVR 9.2 billion project was arranged during the Solih government’s term.

“The current structure and design of the terminal, both inside and out, are the result of decisions and work done by the previous government,” Ameer said. “President Yameen and President Muizzu are trying to take credit, but the credit should go to the Solih administration.”

The new terminal is scheduled to open on 26 July.

VIA Terminal Project Details:

  • Contractor: Saudi Bin Laden Group

  • Subcontractor: China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC)

  • Initial estimated cost: MVR 5.3 billion

  • Current estimated cost: MVR 9.2 billion

  • Capacity: 7.5 million passengers annually

  • Features: 40 departure gates, 38 immigration counters, aero bridges

Initially, only national airline Maldivian will operate from the new terminal. Ten additional airlines are expected to move to the terminal starting mid-August.
