President Mohamed Muizzu has said that the development of HDh. Hanimaadhoo International Airport is accelerating, with the target of completing the project by November.
Speaking on Sunday, the President noted that the airport is being developed to meet modern standards. The project was launched under the previous MDP government with funding from an Indian credit line, and substantial work had been completed before the administration changed.
The President said that when the airport becomes operational, a Bank of Maldives counter will be established to allow departing passengers to purchase US dollars at bank rates. He also announced that a dollar ATM would be installed in Hanimaadhoo next year.
“This will provide a significant benefit to local tourism workers,” he said, adding that a passport service will also be introduced in Hanimaadhoo.
Earlier in July, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib said that 88.7 per cent of the project had been completed, with September initially announced as the completion date.
The project is being carried out under the Indian Exim Bank credit line.
