The State Trading Organisation (STO) has begun selling 23 staple food items at reduced prices across its supermarkets as part of the government’s effort to make essential goods more affordable to the public.
The initiative, which started on Wednesday, includes 20 imported fruits and vegetables, along with dhal, eggs and coconuts.
The fruits being sold include bananas, apples, oranges, lemons, passion fruit, mangoes, papayas, watermelons, chillies, and grapes. The vegetables added to the scheme are onions, ginger, carrots, aubergine, sweet potatoes, potatoes, cabbage, pumpkin, and garlic.
STO said that the prices of the items have been set in line with market rates and will be adjusted as market prices change. Updated prices will be available on the Ministry of Economic Development’s Agumagu portal.
The company stated that it is considering additional measures to improve the supply and distribution of these products based on demand.
“STO’s goal is to ensure the consistent availability of essential food items at reasonable prices,” the company said in a statement.
