China’s Hunan No. 6 Engineering Company has been awarded the contract to expand the passenger terminal at N. Maafaru International Airport.

Island Aviation Services (IAS), the operator of the airport, signed the agreement with the company at a ceremony held on Thursday.

The two-storey terminal expansion project is valued at USD 3.6 million and is to be completed within 10 months.

IAS previously stated that the terminal will be expanded to meet international standards, including facilities such as lounges.

The runway at Maafaru Airport, which handles the second-highest number of private jets in the Maldives outside Malé, has already been upgraded to Code E and became operational earlier this year.

Since the airport opened in 2019, more than 3,000 international flights have landed at Maafaru.

A separate project is underway to expand aircraft parking capacity. Once completed, the airport will be able to accommodate 30 private jets simultaneously.

Island Aviation is also holding discussions with airlines to begin scheduled flights to Maafaru, which the company says will play a key role in the development of Noonu Atoll and surrounding regions.

Maafaru Airport was developed with assistance from the Abu Dhabi Fund.
