India reduces budgeted aid to Maldives in new fiscal year

Neighbouring India has allocated Rs 550 crore, equivalent to USD 59 million, in assistance to the Maldives in its budget for the 2026–27 financial year.
India’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year was presented to the legislature on Sunday. The allocation for assistance to the Maldives represents a reduction compared to the current financial year.
For the 2025–26 financial year, India had budgeted Rs 625 crore, or USD 68 million, in aid to the Maldives.
The budget also includes an allocation of Rs 1,292 crore, equivalent to USD 140 million, for training programmes involving multiple countries.
India has reduced its assistance to the Maldives compared to the previous year, while continuing to implement a number of projects through its credit line. These include housing initiatives and the Greater Malé Connectivity Bridge project.
