Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the government is taking steps to maintain fuel supply despite changes in global oil prices linked to developments in the Middle East.

In a post on social media, the minister said two fuel shipments arrived in the Maldives last week and additional deliveries are scheduled in line with supply arrangements.

He said the State Trading Organisation (STO) is managing fuel stocks to avoid shortages.

According to the minister, STO procures fuel based on national demand through agreements with suppliers under a nomination system.

He said the government is working to manage the impact of global developments on the Maldives.

The minister also said that fuel, gas, food items and other essential goods will continue to be available.

A recent shipment is expected to meet national demand for 17 days.

Global oil prices have risen above $100 per barrel following developments in the Middle East.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that disruptions in energy supply could affect prices and economic activity if the situation continues.
